ThePossessionReport
The Possession Report partners with college basketball programs to strengthen their basketball intelligence through one certified possession-based platform.
Every report is built from the same possession engine, giving coaches, players, and staff one source of truth for evaluating performance, preparing for opponents, and improving throughout the season.
From Game Recaps and Scouting Reports to Season Evaluations, Weekly Pulse, Player Pages, and Team Locker access, every product works together as one Basketball Intelligence Platform designed to help programs prepare smarter, communicate better, and win more games.
Who owns basketball intelligence in your program?
In most programs it is scattered — an assistant builds the scout, video cuts the film, somebody pulls numbers on a laptop, and none of it lives in one place or speaks one language. The Possession Report brings it together into one certified intelligence platform for your entire staff and locker room.
Scattered
- Scouting built by hand, a different way every week
- Numbers pulled from three sources that disagree
- Nothing certified — and nothing says what was left out
- Players never see their own record
One certified platform
- Every report from one possession engine — one source of truth
- Recaps after every game, scouting before every opponent
- Published when supported, withheld when it is not, and it says which
- Every player gets their own page in the Team Locker
We don’t deal in opinions.
We deal in possessions.
Every player and every team is measured on one thing — what they did with the possessions and the minutes they had. Not reputation. Not the eye test. Not who’s on the poster.
So yes — a household name can land near the bottom, and a role player can top the chart. We’re not ranking talent or hype. We’re measuring what happened on the floor, possession by possession. The numbers fall where they fall — and the data don’t lie.

Where the game
gets studied.
Coaches, staffs, and players don’t need more numbers — they need the right ones, possession by possession. That’s the report.
We look at the game differently.
Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks — that’s the easy part. Anybody can hand you a traditional box score. The hard part is going past it — and letting the data speak to what really happened during the game.
Possession breakdown
Every trip becomes evidence — makes, turnovers, empty possessions, second chances, late-game execution.
PBiR impact
The Playback Index Rating grades the actions that matter — not just the numbers that reach the box score.
Minute by minute
We read every one of the game’s 40 minutes. A possession-flow graph shows the exact minute control changed hands, and a full breakdown names the best performer of every single minute.
What to fix next
Every report ends with direction — what to emphasize, who to target, what must improve before the next game.
Made for the people who live in the film room.

Coaches & staffs
Walk into the next practice knowing exactly where the game turned — and what to fix before tip-off.

Players & teams
Every player wants to know their PBiR. See your real impact — the number that shows what you actually did with the minutes you played, not just what the box score counted. It moves when the habits move: one fewer turnover, one more defensive rebound secured, one more possession finished.

Scouts & front offices
Evaluate on possessions, not box scores — with a Certified PBiR Data Score on every report.
The number sees what the box score misses.
PBiR stands for Playback Index Rating. Every play is logged, replayed, graded, and added into a running impact score. We don’t make the facts — we report them.
The point weights stay proprietary. The logic stays simple: good actions lift the number, empty actions drag it down, winning actions separate.
The Possession Report tells you why. That’s the difference between statistics and basketball intelligence.

The mission
Every staff deserves film-room intelligence on every possession — not just a stat line. We turn the official play-by-play of any game into a clear, print-clean story of where it was won, where it was lost, and what to fix next.
The engine
It runs on PBiR — the Playback Index Rating. We log every possession and grade 16 universal basketball events to measure each player’s and team’s true impact, then layer on possession efficiency and the Efficiency Thermometer. The number doesn’t lie.
Who built it
The Possession Report was founded and built by Herman Johnson Jr. — a New Jersey basketball lifer. He spent three years at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City under Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, three years at St. Patrick’s in Elizabeth under Kevin Boyle, and seven seasons as head coach at Northern Burlington County Regional High School in Columbus, New Jersey — where he coached his son Jayson Johnson, now a marketing manager with New Balance. He also coached with SportsU, one of the top AAU programs in New Jersey and the country. He’s the father of Matt Johnson — a two-time national champion at UConn, who coached a season at Princeton and is now an assistant coach at Boston College. He built PBiR to put real possession-level intelligence in every coach’s hands.
